Choosing the Right School for Your Child

What to consider when selecting colleges and universities.

For international families relocating to England, the housing decision often begins with the school decision — or at the very least, should be read alongside it. Your child's educational journey directly shapes the neighbourhood you live in, daily commutes, social environment, and long-term university goals. In this guide, Meridien Luxe examines what to consider when choosing schools, colleges, and universities — through the lens of location, curriculum, and quality of life.

This is not a league table. The aim is to help upper-segment families build an informed decision framework.

Understanding the English education system

Before making choices, it helps to clarify the basic structure. There are two main pathways in England:

  • State schools — free; placement is typically based on catchment area (residential proximity)
  • Independent schools — fee-paying; admissions involve application, interview, and assessment processes that vary by school

Age groups broadly follow: primary school (4–11), secondary school (11–16 or 18), then Sixth Form or college (16–18). University entry is through A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or equivalent qualifications.

Primary school: where the foundation is laid

Ages 4–11 are critical for language adaptation, confidence, and learning habits. If you are considering a state school, research which catchment your residential address falls into in advance; demand for homes near Ofsted "Outstanding" or "Good" schools is structurally higher.

Key considerations

  • Ofsted report — academic performance, behaviour culture, and leadership quality
  • Catchment reality — the distance threshold for recent admissions (this can change year to year)
  • ESL / EAL support — language programmes for children new to English
  • Walkability — a safe school route and daily quality of life for the family
  • Class sizes and resources — provision for art, sport, music, and enrichment

For families choosing independent primary schools, a school visit is essential. You can only understand the gap between a brochure's "mission" and the classroom atmosphere by observing in person.

Secondary school: where college selection begins

The 11+ transition is one of the most decisive thresholds in the English education journey. Grammar school entrance exams, independent school bursary programmes, or state secondary transfer — each pathway has a different timeline and preparation requirement.

State secondary schools

Strong state secondaries in areas such as Richmond, Kingston, Sutton, and parts of north London are popular among international families. Out-of-catchment applications are generally not possible — so the housing decision should not precede the school decision.

Independent and boarding options

Upper-segment families often evaluate established institutions such as Westminster, St Paul's, King's College School, Latymer Upper, and Godolphin & Latymer. Boarding becomes relevant when parents remain in Turkey or elsewhere — but guardian arrangements, holiday accommodation, and emotional adaptation must be planned separately.

  • Curriculum — GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, or IB offering
  • University placement record — proportions progressing to Oxbridge, Russell Group, and international universities
  • Clubs and enrichment culture — sport, arts, leadership programmes
  • International student ratio — is diversity or local integration the priority?
  • Transport — school bus, tube line, or boarding provision

The most prestigious school is not necessarily the right school for your child. Fit with character, learning style, and family structure matters more than league tables.

Sixth Form and college (16–18): the bridge to university

College selection is, in practice, the beginning of university selection. Choosing three or four A-Level subjects — or a broader IB curriculum — determines which degree pathways remain open.

Critical questions for college selection

  • Which exam system is offered? (A-Level, IB, BTEC)
  • What is the placement rate to your target university group? (Russell Group, Ivy League, Europe)
  • How strong is UCAS guidance and personal statement support?
  • Are internships, research, and work experience opportunities available?
  • How is transport to central London or campus universities?

Independent schools offering Sixth Form in London (e.g. Westminster Sixth Form, King's College School, Highgate) and specialist colleges (e.g. Cardiff Sixth Form College, MPW) provide different learning environments. The former tends to build on long-term school culture; the latter often offers a more intensive, exam-focused structure.

University selection: fit over brand

International families often focus on ranking tables when choosing a university. The better question is: Will my child thrive academically and socially in this environment for four years?

Evaluation criteria

  • Department strength — faculty research and industry connections matter more than overall university rank
  • Campus vs city university — Bath or Durham-style campus experience vs central London institutions such as UCL, Imperial, or LSE
  • Student visa and post-graduation pathway — alignment with the Graduate Route and career plans
  • Cost of living — total budget difference between London and cities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, or Edinburgh
  • Community and support — international student office, mentoring, and wellbeing resources

Russell Group universities (Imperial, UCL, LSE, King's, Warwick, and others) are a strong reference point — but the best address varies by subject. Engineering often points to Imperial; law and social sciences to LSE; multidisciplinary liberal education to UCL.

Location: school first or home first?

In Meridien Luxe's approach, the answer is clear: education planning and housing planning must be read together.

  • If targeting a state school — catchment first, then property
  • If targeting an independent school — neighbourhood selection within the school's travel radius
  • If considering boarding — greater flexibility on weekend family home location
  • As university approaches — city strategy for student accommodation or family investment

Areas such as Richmond, St John's Wood, Hampstead, Wimbledon, and Dulwich are frequently evaluated by international families for their strong school ecosystems. However, every child and every family is different — the neighbourhood "everyone chooses" may not be right for you.

Additional considerations for international families

  • Language transition — age-appropriate ESL support and language balance at home
  • Guardian arrangements — legal guardian and emergency protocols when parents remain overseas
  • Holidays and family reunification — accommodation plans for half-terms and summer breaks
  • Cultural adaptation — the school's international student integration programmes
  • Tax and residence — UK tax residence and education costs in light of family structure

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a school based solely on league tables
  • Buying property without researching catchment areas
  • Missing 11+ or independent school application deadlines
  • Not involving the child in the process
  • Making school and housing decisions independently of each other
